Big cities pose lots of options for work/careers, lifestyle and other great things. It suprised me given my current residence how many people ‘fly the nest’ and leave for hubs of culture such as London and Birmingham and indeed many of the larger cities in the UK.
When it comes to actually making the move to living in a city far away there are some practicalities which must be address before you can actually ‘fit in’ and enjoy life. Some of these are listed below.
- Making sure you have some money before you move. This is especially necessary when it comes from say moving from the sleepy West Country to the hustle and financial bustle of say London. When it comes to money the difference in price is incredible and its definitely worth saving almost double what you might in a smaller city as it will be used up quickly.
- Make sure you can move all of your stuff straight away. There is simply nothing worse than moving away and leaving certain items which are basically essential to your life and perhaps even well being. For example I would feel a bit lost if I didn’t have my guitar at my beck and call. Using an established van rental firm (obviously make sure the vehicle is pretty big!) will make life that one bit better.
- Simple do not move someone where you have no friends. Nothing is worse then being alone. As people do not notice alone people. Make sure you have someone to show you around and more importantly introduce you to more people. As someone once said to me about London its a ‘city you can walk past someone one day and never see them again.’

When it comes to making the choice to ‘fly the nest’ its probably more important to think about it then you think…
